Position Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Strategic Communications Director to play a pivotal role in advancing our strategic communications efforts in line with our organisational strategy. This role is designed to go beyond traditional PR and promotional activities, focusing on ecosystem building, strategic narrative development, and supporting a broader movement within the food system space. The successful candidate will lead initiatives that enhance our influence and convening potential, collaborating with partners, grantees, and other stakeholders to deliver impactful communications that align with our mission.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications and Ecosystem Building:
- Develop and execute communications strategies to help deliver organisational priorities which will include:
- Winning the global narrative: Making the case for plant-rich diets, ensuring the scientific base is solid and well communicated and countering misinformation.
- Working with the Tilt Research team help identify and publish/launch messaging and message testing research to fill knowledge gaps and develop thought leadership.
- Amplifying champions: Create a communications hub to identify, source and publish case studies and other evidence-based communications spotlighting successes in the food transition space to build a positive narrative and help dismantle misleading narratives.
- Identify and collaborate with organisations, partners and donors working on strategic communications to amplify collective impact and secure funding for joint initiatives.
- Create a supporting communications plan to help enlist private and public sector champions: including a coalition of CEO level leaders.
- Support the execution of our strategy by developing specific plans to target key audiences, such as elite media and research potential media partnerships.
Campaign Development and Local Strategy Support
- Generate and incubate ideas for large scale communications campaigns that can be executed in collaboration with the growing food transition movement.
- Work closely with Tilt Collective Country Directors to develop and implement communications strategies that support national environmental priorities, ensuring local campaigns align with global strategic goals.
Grantee and Partner Support:
- Design and implement strategies to enhance and amplify the communications efforts of a range of Tilt Collective' grantees, ensuring alignment with their objectives and broader strategic goals.
- Provide communications support to grantees, assisting them in developing inbound and outbound strategies that maximise their impact.
- Collaborate with grantees and partners to develop and deliver unbranded campaigns that address key issues.
Global Media Relations and Content Management
- Serve as the primary liaison with global media outlets, fostering relationships that advance our strategic communications objectives and ensuring Tilt Collective is well represented internationally.
- Support the Chief Communications Officer and comms team in the identification and creation of compelling, strategically aligned content across all platforms, ensuring consistency and coherence of Tilt Collective’ brand identity.
Team Leadership, Internal Communications, and Reporting
- Lead and mentor a Communications Assistant, providing professional development opportunities and fostering a positive work environment.
- Ensure effective internal communication across the organisation.
- Track and analyse the effectiveness of strategic communication efforts, preparing and presenting reports on communication activities and achievements to the Leadership Team and Tilt Board.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent work experience) in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in a communications role, with a focus on strategic communications, preferably within the nonprofit sector.
- Proven experience in ecosystem building and strategic communication within a specific issue area or sector.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to diverse audiences.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing a team.
- Knowledge of environmental issues and the nonprofit sector is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in digital marketing, social media management, and content creation.
- Experience with media relations, global media networks, and managing external agencies.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
Salary
USA based candidates: The salary for the role will be in the range USD 120,000 – 160,000 for US staff subject to location and experience.
International (ex United States): For candidates based outside the United States, salary ranges are determined entirely by local market benchmarks in the candidate’s location. The U.S. salary range has no influence or bearing on the determination of salaries for international candidates. More information on different geographical salary ranges can be obtained during the interview process.
