Position Summary
Building on a successful first two years of development and resource mobilization, the Senior Development Director will serve as Tilt Collective’s lead on fundraising and philanthropic partnerships, responsible for developing and executing Tilt’s strategy to achieve its immediate and long-term fundraising goals.
We are looking for someone with deep expertise in the climate philanthropy landscape, who brings a proven track record of securing major gifts from foundations and institutional funders, as well as high network individuals and health-oriented foundations. We welcome candidates from adjacent sectors with complex, systems-level philanthropy, such as international development, food security, or health. This position works very closely with the Leadership Team, especially the CEO and Chief of Staff, and oversees the Development team.
Key Responsibilities
Fundraising Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy aligned with organizational goals
- Help secure 7- and 8-figure gifts from major donors, with opportunities to pursue 9-figure pledges and multi-year commitments
- Oversee stewardship of all major fundraising relationships
- Work with our Chief Communications Officer to position Tilt Collective as a leader in the field of food and climate among climate, nature, and health philanthropy
- Lead field-building and co-funding efforts including convening funders, designing pooled funds and matches, and aligning portfolios
- Advise on Board development and support our Board members in fundraising outreach.
Stakeholder Relationship Management
- Personally manage a portfolio of 10-20 top prospects in Europe and the US, leading asks at $1M-$10M+
- Cultivate/co-ordinate and maintain relationships with principals and senior leaders at target donor organizations
- Build strategic partnerships with aligned donors and leading organizations supporting climate and health philanthropy
- Represent the organization at conferences, convenings, and networking events within relevant philanthropic communities
- Work with communications team to develop compelling donor-facing materials and impact narratives
Team Leadership
- Lead the Development Team, serving as a key connection point to the Leadership Team to inform strategic planning and organizational direction based on fundraising
- Manage and mentor development staff, building internal fundraising capacity and determining the future capacity needs
- Collaborate closely with program staff to ensure fundraising approach aligns with organizational and programmatic strategy
- Design and coach CEO/Board on peer-to-peer solicitations, including preparing briefings
Pipeline and Donor Management
- Work with the Development Project Manager and Development Operations Associate to create systems for tracking donor relationships and funding pipelines
- Oversee donor reporting and relationship management with existing donors, working closely with the MEAL Senior Advisor.
- Develop strategies for updating donors on interim progress to build support renewed or increased funding
Required Qualifications
Experience and Expertise
- Minimum 7 years of senior-level fundraising experience, with at least 5 years in environmental, climate, or health philanthropy
- Demonstrated track record of securing gifts of $10M and greater from foundations and organizational donors
- Deep knowledge of the climate philanthropy landscape, including major foundations, donor networks, and funding trends
- Demonstrated experience fundraising across borders (UK/EU/US) and comfort with cross-border giving
- Understanding of the intersections of climate and food funding with health, food security, and development agendas
- Willingness to travel as needed to support fundraising
- Experience with food systems subject matter
Skills and Competencies
- Exceptional relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong strategic thinking and ability to be agile to emerging philanthropic opportunities
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse donor audiences
- Experience managing and developing teams, especially virtual ones
- Ability to travel for relationship building and representation
- Passion for scaling climate solutions
- Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort operating in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
- Leads with collaboration and humility as part of a leadership team
The expected salary range for this position in the United States is USD $160,000 to $220,000 per year. This range applies to candidates based in the U.S., and the final offer will depend on factors such as the candidate’s experience, skills, and location within the country.
For candidates based outside of the United States, compensation details will be discussed during the interview process. Please note that international salaries are not direct currency conversions of the U.S. range; they are determined based on local market conditions and compensation benchmarks in each respective country / location.
